Diamonds sleeping rough

Inspect the root
The raw and bloody underground
Buried for so long, now
Suddenly pulsating in full view

Only the earthquake could reveal it
Veined, visceral and wrenched from deep below
Its quivering mass is smaller than it seemed
Yet larger and larger

Like unearthing something awful in the wilderness.
Dappled leaf shadow on your face
Sharp intake of breath
And abruptly you perceive him

The still and watchful figure, crouched
At the corners of your mind
Unkempt and lost but plain as day
He has been sitting there all along
